With the midway point of the 2021 CFL season fast approaching, the race for playoff berths remains tight across the league. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers remain the exception. Winners in five of their first six contests, the Blue Bombers have seized control of the top of the West Division standings, and have gained momentum on the Grey Cup odds.
Winnipeg will be aiming to extend their divisional lead with a fourth straight victory when they visit the slumping Edmonton Elks on Saturday as strong road favourites in one of four games on this weekend’s schedule. The action begins on Friday when the Calgary Stampeders visit the Hamilton Tiger-Cats as lengthy underdogs and the Saskatchewan Roughriders host the Toronto Argonauts as home chalk. The BC Lions aim to extend their recent road success when they visit the Montreal Alouettes as underdogs in Saturday’s other matchup.

Calgary Stampeders vs Hamilton Tiger-Cats -2.5
The Calgary Stampeders aim to build on a huge 32-16 victory over Edmonton last weekend, as they travel to Hamilton to face the Tiger-Cats as 2.5-point underdogs on the CFL odds at Bet99. The Stamps put the brakes on a two-game SU slide with last weekend’s win over the Elks, but still have work to do to climb out of the basement in the CFL West Division standings.
Perched among the favourites on the Grey Cup odds at the start of the season, the Stampeders have been hit hard by injuries, and currently sit well off the pace as an 11.00 bet on the CFL futures at Sports Interaction. The club sorely missed quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell, who was sidelined by a broken leg. However, the two-time CFL passing touchdowns leader provided a much-needed spark in his return to action last weekend.

The Ti-Cats have some work of their own to do to get back into the East Division race after falling 17-16 in Toronto last weekend. Hamilton has posted wins in just two of five contests this season but claimed victory in their lone home date so far this summer, a decisive 32-19 win over the Argonauts on Labour Day. Hamilton’s shaky start has yet to impact their position on the Grey Cup odds at BetSafe, where they sit second to the Blue Bombers as a short 4.00 bet. However, the Tiger-Cats face a mammoth task to flip the script on a lengthy run of futility against Calgary, whom they have beaten just three times in 25 overall meetings since 2008.
The Pick: Stampeders to win outright (2.15 at Funbet)
Toronto Argonauts vs Saskatchewan Roughriders -4
Perched atop the East Division standings, the Toronto Argonauts vie for their third win of the season while sporting positive odds, when they visit Saskatchewan as 4-point underdogs. The Argos currently sit first in the East Division standings with a 3-2 SU record but have struggled with consistency. The squad has failed to win consecutive games this season, and have come up short in their past two road dates, in Hamilton and Winnipeg.

Success has also eluded the Argos in recent dates with Saskatchewan. Toronto has lost outright in seven of eight meetings with the Roughriders, a run that features a trio of road defeats by double-digit margins. However, opportunity knocks for the Argonauts against a Saskatchewan squad coming off back-to-back lopsided losses to Winnipeg, in which they scored just 17 total points. Look for the Argonauts to halt their slide with an upset win in a low-scoring contest.
The Picks: Argonauts to win outright (2.55 Betsafe); UNDER 44 (1.91)
BC Lions vs Montreal Alouettes -3
The Montreal Alouettes look to keep pace with Toronto in the East Division as they play host the BC Lions as 3-point favourites at Funbet. The Als snapped a two-game losing streak in dominating fashion last time out, posting a crushing 51-29 victory in Ottawa, and return to action well rested after enjoying a bye last weekend.

The Lions are also coming off a pair of massive victories over the RedBlacks, capped by a 45-13 win on home turf last weekend, and have emerged as one of the toughest road teams in the CFL this season. In addition to knocking off Ottawa on the road late last month, the Lions stunned Calgary with a 15-9 win after opening their campaign with a narrow 33-29 loss in Saskatchewan.
That marks a massive turnaround after losing 21 of their previous 26 road dates. However, the exception to that slide has been Montreal, where the Lions have won four of their past five, fueling a dominating 8-1 run in their past nine overall against the Als.
The Pick: Lions +3 (1.95 Betsafe)

Winnipeg Blue Bombers -7 vs Edmonton Elks
The Blue Bombers will try to maintain a smothering defence that has been key to their climb to the top of the league standings when they visit Edmonton on Saturday as 7-point road favourites. With their two recent wins over Saskatchewan, the Bombers have now held opponents to single-digit point totals on four occasions while racking up a 5-1 record. In addition to going 4-1 against the spread, Winnipeg has regularly paid out out to sports bettors taking the UNDER in totals betting, which is currently on a 5-1 run.
Bombers prepared for challenge from Elks, despite injury to Edmonton’s star quarterback Harris: Just like everyone else in the CFL, members of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers were shocked to hear that Edmonton Elks star quarterback won’t be in… https://t.co/MU83zEHv64 via @Ted_Wyman pic.twitter.com/MJjElratZl

Considering how the Elks offence has sputtered at times this season, another Bombers defensive gem may await on Saturday night at Commonwealth Stadium. But while the Blue Bombers have posted wins in three of four dates with the Elks, they have surrendered 27 points per game over their past three meetings with Edmonton.
The Picks: Blue Bombers -7 (1.95 Funbet); OVER 43.5 (1.86)
