The Baltimore Orioles are one of Major League Baseball’s in-form sides right now, winning eight of their last 10 league games. At the other end of the spectrum, Toronto are quickly slipping down the baseball ladder and the Blue Jays are in total disarray – John Gibbons’ men have now lost seven of their most recent 10 encounters.
Away from home, Toronto have struggled all season and their woes may continue for the time being. With a 27-38 record, the Blue Jays have been disappointing on the road and it will take a minor miracle for Toronto to defeat a Baltimore side that have won 41 of their 68 Major League Baseball games so far this campaign.
Toronto Blue Jays
Toronto fans, this season has been haunted from the start. The Blue Jays have struggled to get going from the outset and Gibbons knows that his position is rocky at best. Looking at the 2018 campaign, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see Toronto with a new head coach and a handful of underperforming stars out of the exit door.
Not for the first time this season, Toronto will be relying on the likes of Justin Smoak and Josh Donaldson to spring a surprise against Baltimore. With the two Blue Jays stars on the roster, anything is possible but it is hard to back the Canadian outfit on current form. At the time of writing, Toronto are valued as outsiders to win the opening game of this weekend’s mini-series and a whitewash could be on the cards if the Orioles find their best form.
KEY MAN: KENDRYS MORALES. With Justin Smoak potentially out through injury, the onus may be on Kendrys Morales to lead Toronto to victory. The Blue Jays star was sublime in Toronto’s latest success against the Orioles earlier this week – hitting three home runs and recording a seven RBI index. If John Donaldson can shine, Morales may prosper further with the added distraction of Toronto’s other big hitter.
It won’t be easy but Morales and co have already shown that they can defeat the Orioles this weekend and another success could follow over the course of the weekend. Baltimore don’t lose at home too often and another Blue Jays victory could be a positive sign for future success if nothing else for the 2017 season…
Baltimore will be looking to bounce back after that disappointing defeat to the Blue Jays on Friday and it would take a brave man to back against the hosts in this clash. Prior to that defeat, Baltimore had won eight of their last nine Major League Baseball fixtures – hitting form at exactly the right time to surge towards the postseason.
With a bit of luck, the Orioles could yet finish in one of the top two seeds in the American League East; although the New York Yankees are now three wins ahead of Baltimore in the current rankings. Watch this space, Baltimore will bounce back in the near future and the Blue Jays could be on the end of a good hiding this weekend.
Toronto won the latest contest between these two sides but it is time for Baltimore to prove their worth on the big stage. Time is running out for the Orioles to show that they belong in the playoffs and Baltimore may show their postseason credentials with a dominant effort on home soil. As always, you cannot write this inconsistent Blue Jays side off completely but all signs point towards a Baltimore triumph.
