It is going to take something special for the Toronto Blue Jays to compete in Major League Baseball’s postseason this year. John Gibbons’ men have struggled to build momentum after an exceptional April and May and they STILL sit at the bottom of the American League East.
Toronto are now out to 40/1 with Bet365 and William Hill to get back to their brilliant best and win the World Series but a recovery looks unlikely. For the most part of June, the Blue Jays were disappointing and it would take a catastrophic collapse from their divisional rivals to stand any chance of a shock inclusion in the playoffs.
Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox are sitting pretty at the top of the division but haven’t been fantastic away from home. The visitors have lost 21 of their 40 road games so far this season and Toronto will be confident of giving their rivals a beating on home soil.
Toronto Blue Jays
In recent times, Toronto have struggled against the Red Sox; losing five of their last seven games. However, the Blue Jays have performed well at home in recent months and they will take plenty of confidence from those efforts in front of their own fans.
It won’t be easy but Toronto have enough quality and talent in their ranks to at least give the Red Sox a good game. Who knows, they might even come up trumps if they find their best form.
KEY MAN: JUSTIN SMOAK. Without a doubt, Smoak is the standout performer on this Blue Jays roster. For the most part of the campaign, he has been Toronto’s shining light and it would take a brave man to back against the Blue Jays if Smoak is on form. He has already surpassed his career-high tally of 20 home runs in a single season and we’re only just at the midway stage of the campaign; an excellent record to say the least.
If the top baseman in terms of RBI is in an aggressive mood with the bat, Toronto could be in business. Don’t rule them out, especially if Justin Smoak performs well.
Boston Red Sox
The visitors have won 44 games so far this season, losing just 35. However, their form hasn’t been great as of late – winning just five of the last 10 fixtures. On their day, Boston are one of the best teams in baseball and they will take some beating, especially against their lesser rivals. The Red Sox have the pedigree and experience to go on and win the World Series this season and punters should consider backing Boston at 7/1 to do just that.
Nowadays, Boston will be expecting a serious playoff push at the very least and it is hard to envision a collapse ahead of the postseason. Now that the Red Sox are in control of their own destiny, it looks like the World Series is in sight; another championship could be on the cards in the coming months.
KEY MAN: HANLEY RAMIREZ. The Boston star has been in fantastic form as of late and he played a pivotal role in their recent series against the Minnesota Twins. David Price is another big name player who appears to have regained his best form but Ramirez may be the one to watch this weekend.
Toronto will struggle to cope with Boston if they bring their A-Game. The visitors are by far and away the strongest team in the American League East and the Red Sox should emerge victorious over the course of the weekend. The Blue Jays may win one of the latter two games but Gibbons’ men will be up against it from the outset.
