Sunday’s game in the Eastern Conference is important for both sides as they continue to lose ground on the leaders Toronto. For Montreal in particular, three points would be more than desirable as they sit at the wrong end of the table but this fixture will be a tough test against a Red Bulls side who haven’t given up hope of some silverware at the end of the campaign.
The bookies have clearly made up their minds as to who will win as New York lead the match betting by some margin at a top price of 29/50 with MarathonBet. The same bookie is providing the best odds on a draw at 69/20 while anyone favouring the Impact can pick up 5/1 with Bet365.
Form suggests those odds may be spot on: The Red Bulls have lost eight times this season although interestingly, two of those defeats have come at home. Jesse Marsch’s team have lost eight times on the road although that set of results could provide little comfort for Montreal as they head for the Red Bull Arena.
Montreal have done little to impress this year and on the road they are woeful. Four defeats and just one victory on their travels means you may want to look at the side markets but with 11 ties this season, Mauro Biello’s men might give you some value at those draw odds of 69/20.
Individual goal scorers
As you’d expect, the goal scorer markets are dominated by Red Bull men and it’s Bradley Wright-Phillips who starts as favourite to find the net first at a top price of 11/4 with Bet365. With 78 goals in 125 league games since leaving the UK, the striker is an obvious favourite here but who else can we consider?
Haitian international Derrick Etienne may surprise some punters as the second favourite in the first goal scorer betting. With just one goal in 7 matches in the new MLS season, a best price of 6/1 with Bet365 isn’t really tempting us right now.
A better option could be to look at one of the first Montreal Impact names on the list. Matteo Mancosu is an experienced Italian striker with three goals in nine league appearances in 2017, and at a top price of 8/1 with Bet365 the Montreal man is a strong option. In fact, we will make Mancosu our next tip but this time we’re looking at the anytime market where he is listed at a best of 12/5 with Ladbrokes to find the net at any stage in 90 minutes.
Other side bets
Anyone looking for a glut of goals in this game could end up being disappointed. New York have found the net just 28 times in this campaign – that’s less than any other side in the top six and it’s actually two less than Montreal Impact who have recorded 30.
As such, the under 2.5 line could well come into play in the total goals market at 6/4 with MarathonBet. However, for our final tip we will take Both Team to Score as the sides each have current defensive issues and that would currently land at 4/6 with 10Bet.
A 1-1 correct score is tempting too at 8/1 with Winner Sports as we are keeping faith with the Canadians. It’s not been the best of seasons for the Impact but they are the ‘tie specialists’ up to a point and New York Red Bulls are not the most threatening of opponents, even on home soil.
