Philadelphia Union vs Montreal Impact: Hosts Too Strong for Spirited Visitors?

On home soil, Philadelphia Union are rock solid. Jim Curtin’s side have lost just once at the Talen Energy Stadium since mid-April and home supporters will be expecting another crucial win against Montreal Impact this weekend. The visitors don’t travel particularly well, they have won just one of their last eight away fixtures but they did get the better of Philadelphia last month in the reverse encounter. This could be a very entertaining game of football.

Philadelphia Union vs Montreal Impact: Hosts Too Strong for Spirited Visitors?

Mauro Biello, Montreal Impact’s coach

Unsurprisingly, Philadelphia are red hot favourites with the bookmakers. As of August 10th, you can back the Union at an industry best price of 10/11 with Winner Sports and plenty of bettors will be keen to do just that – the omens all point to a home victory.

But don’t write Montreal off completely. The Canadian side have tended to save their best performances for the big stage this season and this is certainly a mammoth clash. Should Mauro Biello’s men shut up shop and defend for their lives, a draw – valued at 14/5 with bet365 – could be on the cards.

Fancy the Impact to get over their travelling demons? If so, they are available at a hefty price. 10Bet are going 3/1 on an away victory here and stranger things have happened. It would be foolish to rule it out.

Individual Goal Scorers

Look no further than C.J. Sapong. The Philadelphia man has been in fantastic form so far this season, notching 12 league goals for the Union. Currently a 5/4 shot with Betway to score during 90 minutes this weekend, he is quite short but worth consideration based on current form.

Fabrice Jean-Picault also deserves a second glance. Should Sapong struggle, Picault may be required to step up and hit the target. Available at around 8/1 as a general figure, he has a decent chance but wouldn’t be the number one man to target – Sapong is Philadelphia’s shining star.

Montreal’s goals have been shared out and they don’t have one standout candidate to hit the back of the net on a weekly basis. Argentinian Ignacio Piatti currently leads the team with nine MLS goals and punters may look at him as a potential option in this market. He is currently 2/1 to score anytime with bet365 and he is certainly backable at that price.

Anthony Jackson-Hamel is another name in the mix. The Impact striker has been solid this season but is yet to make a major impression on Major League Soccer. At 13/2 to open the scoring with 10Bet, he could be ready for a big performance.

Other Side Bets

Not a fixture traditionally blessed with goals but this has all the makings of a modern classic – let’s just hope it lives up to expectation. Philadelphia will expect to win and punters will be tempted by the 23/10 available with 888Sport for the Union to win with both teams scoring on Sunday. That wager has landed in three of Philly’s last six wins on home soil and it could prove prudent to follow that trend.

In addition, the 13/10 available for Philadelphia to be leading at half-time is also tasty for punters backing the home side. It may seem like we’re going all in against Montreal but the respective records of both sides suggest a home triumph. An early goal or two could see the hosts get into their rhythm and the Impact may struggle to keep tabs.
