Portland Timbers vs Vancouver Whitecaps: Odds And Betting PreviewThe Portland Timbers are sitting pretty atop Major League Soccer’s Western Conference and Vancouver may find it tough going when they clash this weekend. On paper, Portland are by far and away the stronger of the two sides but victory over Seattle in Vancouver’s most recent outing could tempt punters to back the visitors for a shock success.

Match Odds

At the time of writing, Portland are red hot favourites and you can back the hosts to win at 3/4 with most Canadian bookmakers. The Timbers have won just once in four league games but most fans will expect Caleb Porter’s men to get back to winning ways this weekend.

However, some will be tempted by the draw; especially at an inflated price. Winner Sports are going 3/1 for a stalemate in this contest and punters may be tempted given Portland’s inconsistent start to the campaign. For those feeling brave, Vancouver are priced at 15/4 with the same firm for a surprise away triumph.

Both teams have struggled defensively this season, conceding 20 goals in 13 league games combined. Bettors who fancy goals can back over 2.5 goals at 9/13 with 10Bet and that has landed in their last three head-to-head fixtures.

Prior to those three encounters, goals were hard to come by and spectators were treated to a number of dull affairs. The 0-0 is available at 11/1 with 888sport and a low-key contest may be on the cards after a hectic start to the new Major League Soccer campaign.

Individual goal scorers

Portland have two of the in-form strikers in the league at their disposal and the Timbers will fancy their chances of bagging a few goals in this clash. Fanendo Adi has been phenomenal so far this season, scoring five times in seven appearances – and punters can back him at an industry best 11/10 to add to his tally this weekend.

However, it may prove prudent to go with Diego Valeri. Like Adi, he has been scoring for fun and he is much easier to back at 9/5 to score with 888Sport. If you’re feeling brave, 11/2 for Valeri to open the scoring is also a great price considering his attacking threat.

For Vancouver, it’s all about Freddy Montero. The Whitecaps aren’t renowned for owning a plethora of attackers but the Colombia forward might just be their biggest threat. He has struggled for goals so far this season but could prosper against Portland’s shaky backline; the Timbers have kept just one clean sheet in seven outings.

At 9/4 to score anytime with Betway, he is well worth backing. He bagged twice in their recent victory over Seattle and that brace could give him the confidence to push on and add to his tally this weekend.

Other Side bets

Portland have an excellent home record against Vancouver and it is almost impossible to back against the Timbers in this contest. At 1/5 with 888Sport, the Portland/Draw double chance market probably isn’t worth backing but goals could be on the cards – over 4.5 has landed in each of the last two clashes between these sides.

4/1 for the draw at half-time but a Portland victory at full-time looks well priced and those predicting a lipid affair in the opening 45 minutes may be interested by this. The Timbers are in dire need of another victory to pull away at the top of the Western Conference and a draw on home soil isn’t good enough. If it is close, expect Portland to pile the pressure on in the latter stages…

Predicting the correct score is never easy but perhaps a two-nil win for Portland could be on the cards. Despite their defensive deficiencies, it is hard to back Vancouver to hit the back of the net on a regular basis. At 9/1 for a 2-0 home win, it is well worth backing.
