Vancouver Whitecaps vs Columbus Crew: High-Flying Hosts Full Of Confidence

Columbus Crew Coach Gregg Berhalter

Who’d have thought it, the Vancouver Whitecaps are currently sitting pretty at the top of Major League Soccer’s Western Conference. Carl Robinson’s men are level on points with Portland Timbers at the time of writing but the Canadian side have two games in hand on their opponents going into this weekend’s clash with Columbus Crew.

The visitors are also playing well right now and Coach Gregg Berhalter will be quietly confident of masterminding a shock win on the road here. Columbus are fourth in the East but it would be foolish for Vancouver to expect a straightforward contest. The Crew have already shown that they are capable of coming out on top against the strongest MLS units.

Match Odds

Unsurprisingly, Vancouver will head into this one as favourites but they aren’t quite as short as you may have expected. According to odds available with Winner Sports, the Whitecaps are 21/20 to emerge victorious here and plenty of punters will fancy Robinson’s men at that price. The Canadian outfit have lost just one of their previous eight home fixtures – an omen that suggests another Vancouver victory this weekend.

Columbus Crew were forced to settle for a draw last time out and another stalemate could be on the cards here. Both teams look fairly evenly matched on paper and the 27/11 with 888Sport has plenty of appeal. There aren’t usually fireworks when these two sides go up against each other and a low key affair would put the draw into play.

Or perhaps you fancy an away success? Traditionally, Columbus Crew do not travel well but they look much more assured in recent weeks. At 13/5 with Betway, the visitors are worth a second look in the betting markets but may lack the quality to seriously test this Vancouver defensive unit.

Individual Goal Scorers

Fancy Fredo Montero to open the scoring? The Whitecaps striker has bagged 11 MLS goals already this season and is the red hot favourite to notch the opener here. Priced at best odds of 13/4 with 10Bet, Montero could be the difference maker for Vancouver once again – he is a decent option to extend his excellent scoring run.

For the visitors, look no further than Ola Kamara. At 6/4 with Bet365 to score during 90 minutes, punters should strongly consider backing the Crew star to get his name on the scoresheet. He is by far and away the most dangerous attacking option in the Columbus squad and he is fighting at the top of Major League Soccer’s goal scoring charts with 15 strikes. Another could be on the cards here.

Other Side Bets

Vancouver should have more than enough to romp to victory in this clash and there may be value in backing the Whitecaps to win without conceding a goal. Columbus have tended to struggle on the road in recent Major League Soccer campaigns; this could be a fairly low key contest that is decided by the odd goal. And at 3/1 to scrape a win to nil with Bet365, it is well worth having a look at Robinson’s side.

In addition, a lack of goals looks very likely here. Under 2.5 goals is available at 5/4 with Bet365 but that is perhaps a little too risky for our liking. It may be a little short at 1/2 with 888Sport but under 3.5 goals looks well priced considering the importance of this game. The stakes are high and a close affair is expected. Don’t expect fireworks here; this should be relatively tame.
