- What: Game 6 in the NBA Western Conference Semifinals between the Phoenix Suns and the Dallas Mavericks
- When: Thursday, May 12, 2022
- Where: The American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas
In Game 5 of the Suns vs. Mavericks series on Tuesday night, Phoenix took back a ton of momentum and struck a devastating blow against Dallas. With a blistering 30-point victory in Game 5 (110-80), the Suns showed why they were the top team in the Western Conference during the regular season and the frontrunners for the NBA Championship. While the contest was close throughout the first half, with the Mavs leading the majority of the game, the Suns pulled away in the third quarter and never looked back. With Game 6 on the horizon and the series shifting back to Dallas, the Mavericks need to pull out all the stops to stay alive.
In this breakdown, CBS will go over what to look for from each team and also who will prevail in Game 6 of this series.

Squad Overview: The Phoenix Suns
As mentioned above, the Suns were spectacular in the second half of Game 5 in Phoenix. Thanks to some fantastic shooting (49.0% field goal percentage as a team) and tenacious rebounding (Phoenix outrebounded Dallas 50 to 38), the Suns easily held off the Mavs in the second half. The stars for the Suns were in full effect on Tuesday night, with Devin Booker (28 points and +25 plus/minus) and Deandre Ayton (20 and +11) putting up efficient scoring nights. Meanwhile, point guard Chris Paul dished out 10 assists while piloting the Suns offense.
With the series shifting back to Dallas, the Suns still have to prove they can win on the road in this series. Phoenix needs to do better than they did in the two contests that occurred in Dallas (Games 3 and 4 where they almost lost by double-digits in both games). However, with Game 5 being the biggest blowout of the series so far, perhaps the Suns have found the winning formula to suffocate the Mavericks. One player to look out for in Game 6 will be power forward Jae Crowder who had an off night on Tuesday. The veteran paint player only had three points and shot an abysmal 1-6 from the field. If he, along with reserve center JaVale McGee, can have some more consistent scoring then the Suns should easily blast the Mavs on the road and advance.
Squad Overview: The Dallas Mavericks
With Game 6 being a potential elimination game for the Mavericks, Dallas needs to do all it can to stave off being eliminated at home. In Game 5, the Mavs were without a paddle in the second half against the Suns. While Dallas led the majority of the first half, at one juncture being up by eight points, they were unable to compete with the superior depth of Phoenix. Even though it was a disappointing night for the Mavs, All-Star guard Luka Doncic still showed out with 28 points along with 11 rebounds.
However, if Dallas wants to keep this series going and force a pivotal winner-take-all contest in Game 7, then they need some more firepower beyond Doncic. Point guard Jalen Brunson has been the most reliable scorer behind Doncic – he had 20 points on Tuesday – but the rest of the Dallas squad has been inconsistent. The remaining three Mavs starters (Dorian Finney-Smith, Reggie Bullock and Dwight Powell) combined for just eight points in Game 5. If the Mavericks can put together some more scorers in double-digits along with getting their swaggering defence going again, then they have a chance to knock off the Suns at home.
Prediction: Following a huge blowout in Game 5, look for the Suns to keep the good times rolling by securing a victory in Game 6 and advancing to the NBA Western Conference Finals. Select the Suns Moneyline (1.15) at Sports Interaction.
