NFL Week 18 Best Bets: Bills, Rams Poised to Clinch Division Titles

There is plenty left to be decided in the NFL playoff picture going into Week 18. In the AFC, the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots remain deadlocked in the battle for first place in the AFC East. In addition, five teams remain in contention for the final two wild cards in the conference, highlighted by a Sunday Night Football showdown between the Los Angeles Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders that will determine who gets one of those spots. The picture is a little clearer in the NFC. Week 17 clashes will determine whether the Arizona Cardinals or Los Angeles Rams will emerge as NFC West champions, while the New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers both remain in the hunt for the final wild card in the conference.

AFC Playoff Picture

A pair of wild card spots and one division title remain to be determined in Week 18. The Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots enter the weekend deadlocked atop the AFC East standings with identical 10-6 SU records. However, the Bills hold the edge in tiebreakers on the strength of their 33-21 win in New England two weeks ago. Currently riding a three-game SU win streak, the Bills have made up for lost ground in NFL futures betting. A 3-5 SU midseason swoon caused the Bills to fade on the Super Bowl 56 odds, dropping to as far as 17.00. However, Buffalo has rebounded during its current surge, and now sports as short as 8.18 at Sports Interaction.

The Bills also enjoy a favourable Week 18, hosting the New York Jets as lengthy 16.5-point favourites. Buffalo has outscored opponents by a wide 60-29 margin while winning two in a row at home. Conversely, the Jets stumble into Highmark Stadium with just one win in five overall outings, and a dismal 1-6 SU road record this season. Meanwhile, the Patriots travel to Miami as 6.5-point favourites at Betway after snapping a two-game slide with a crushing 50-10 win over Jacksonville last weekend. However, the pats have posted just two wins in eight road dates with the Dolphins since 2012.

Two AFC Wild Cards Up for Grabs

While the Bills and Pats battle for the AFC East crown, the Indianapolis Colts aim to clinch one of two remaining wild cards when they visit the Jaguars as heavy 16-point chalk. Currently knotted in a three-way tie with Las Vegas and the Los Angeles Chargers at 9-7, the Colts can lock up a playoff spot simply by claiming victory over the lowly Jags. However, Indy has inexplicably struggled when facing the Jaguars on the road, falling to defeat in each of their past five visits to Jacksonville.

All eyes will be on Allegiant Stadium on Sunday night, as the Raiders host the Chargers as 3-point underdogs, with the winner claiming the third and final wild card, and the losers going home. The Chargers have struggled since opening the campaign on a 4-1 SU run, winning just five of 11 since. Conversely, the Raiders now enjoy a three-game SU win streak after keeping their playoff hopes alive with a 23-20 upset win in Indianapolis last weekend. However, Las Vegas has claimed victory in just one of its past four home dates.

Best Bets: Colts -15.5 (1.90) at Betway; Raiders to win (2.35) at Sports Interaction

NFC Playoff Picture

The playoff picture is somewhat clearer in the NFC, with three division winners decided and six teams already assured of a playoff spot. The NFC West champion has yet to be decided, but it is the Los Angeles Rams who sit in the driver’s seat. The Rams currently control first place with a 12-4 record, one game up on the Arizona Cardinals. The Rams can clinch by avoiding defeat when they host the San Francisco 49ers as 4-point favourites. LA returns home riding a five-game SU win streak after all but extinguishing the Ravens’ playoff hopes with a 20-19 win in Baltimore last weekend. The Rams have also allowed just 8.5-points per game during a 2-0 SU run at SoFi Stadium, and sports a 5-2 SU home record this season.

The 49ers remained one of two teams still in the hunt for the final NFC wild card with last week’s 23-7 home win over Houston, and has now gone 7-3 SU and ATS in their past 10 games. However, the Niners were outclassed in a 31-10 loss to the visiting Rams earlier this season, and will need to snap a five-game losing streak against Los Angeles if they are to advance to the postseason.

The Arizona Cardinals have already claimed a playoff spot and can bounce Los Angeles from the top of the NFC West with a win over the visiting Seattle Seahawks as 6.5-point chalk at Betway, combined with a Rams loss to San Francisco. The 49ers’ tough matchup is good news for the New Orleans Saints, who close out their schedule in Atlanta as 3.5-point road chalk. The 8-8 Saints currently trail San Francisco by one game but can overtake the 49ers in the playoff hunt with an outright win over the freefalling Falcons, combined with a Niners loss in LA.

Best Bets: Rams -4 (1.91); Saints -3.5 (1.91)
