Write the Calgary Flames off at your peril. That was our message to ice hockey fans a few weeks ago and the Flames are now looking very strong as we enter the business end of the 2018/19 National Hockey League season.
On current form, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see the Flames competing for the Stanley Cup in the not-so-distant future.
The manner of their 4-0 victory over the Colorado Avalanche in Game One of the series was something else.
Calgary were ruthless from start to finish and the Flames will look to carry that momentum into this weekend’s contest. Another convincing win in favour of the hosts will put them firmly in command of their playoff destiny.
For Colorado, it was always going to be a difficult feat. The Flames won 50 regular season games inside regulation compared to just 38 for the Avalanche.
There is a clear gulf in class between the two teams and Colorado will be hoping to get at least one win on the board. Avoiding the series whitewash has to be their number one priority before anything else.
The Avalanche had won seven of their previous eight regular season games before that 4-0 loss and Colorado will be looking to get back to winning ways at the first possible chance.
It won’t be easy by any means though; Colorado’s road form in 2018/19 has been sketchy at best and another difficult contest at Calgary awaits. Let’s get down to the action…
Event Date: April 14, 2019
Flames Firing On All Cylinders
Calgary are well placed to lay down a serious challenge for the Stanley Cup this year. Now as short as 8/1 in betting odds with 888sport, the Flames are expected to go close in their bid to lift ice hockey’s ultimate prize. On paper, Calgary certainly tick all the right boxes to go on and enjoy a successful postseason.
Johnny Gaudreau ended the regular season with 99 points – a sublime individual effort. The Flames star will be central to their chances of glory in the coming weeks but it was Matthew Tkachuk who stole the headlines in Game One. He notched a brace to oust the Avalanche and plenty of ice hockey fans will be backing him to make the difference once again.
Avalanche Making Up The Playoff Numbers?
If you’re in the playoffs, you have a chance at Stanley Cup glory – right? Well, probably not in the case of Colorado. It is hard to put too much faith in the Avalanche after a very hit-and-miss campaign and Colorado fans will be hoping rather than expecting. Punters can back a Colorado win at 6/4 this weekend.
Nathan MacKinnon deserves so much more than what the Colorado Avalanche can offer him. One of the standout players in the NHL, he has carried the team to the playoffs but this is the end of their journey. A heavy series defeat beckons unless MacKinnon can take his game to another level – expecting even more of him would be unfair though.
The Flames should prove too strong for Colorado in this encounter – you won’t find too many punters backing the Avalanche here. Calgary look destined for bigger and better things and this is all about winning rather than putting on a show.
Expect the Canadian outfit to make relatively light work of Colorado this weekend. Moving 2-0 up in the series is Calgary’s objective and that looks very likely indeed. In the coming weeks, Calgary have bigger fish to fry and this is the ideal chance to build momentum.
TIP: Calgary Flames to win
CORRECT SCORE: Colorado Avalanche 1-4 Calgary Flames
