It is hard to put too much faith in the Edmonton Oilers at this moment in time. Not only are the Oilers now out of playoff contention but Oscar Klefbom’s season-ending injury has put a real downer on things at Rogers Place. Connor McDavid is back to his brilliant best though and that can only be viewed as a positive as Edmonton look to finish strongly.
The Oilers head into this one in decent form having won six of their previous 10 National Hockey League encounters. Two wins on the spin have helped to lift the mood a little and a victory against divisional rivals Los Angeles Kings will satisfy the Edmonton fan base. It won’t be straightforward by any means but the Oilers have enough quality to compete.
Their opponents this weekend are right in the mix for Stanley Cup glory. The Kings are on the verge of something special and plenty of punters will fancy the Los Angeles-based side to challenge for ice hockey’s ultimate prize this year. At 25/1 with bet365, you wouldn’t bet against them. They have the experience and the class to go deep into the postseason.
McDavid Takes Oilers To The Next Level
Edmonton fans will be left rueing their early season struggles after a solid second half of the campaign. Unfortunately, Todd McLellan’s side left themselves with too much to do and it was always going to be an uphill struggle for the Oilers.
Reaching the playoffs in 2017/18 was the number one objective and that will be the target next season too. Whether the Oilers look to change personnel or not, remains to be seen but McLellan will be confident of leading this Edmonton team to glory in the future.
KEY MAN: Connor McDavid. McDavid is irreplaceable and Edmonton fans know it. With an incredible 94 points in just 74 games, he is having a Most Valuable Player-calibre season and most neutrals would agree that he deserves to win the individual accolade.
The Oilers star scored two goals and assisted two more for his teammates in Edmonton’s win against the Ottawa Senators on March 22nd and another huge effort beckons here. He may not match that performance but anything close should be enough to inspire the Oilers to victory.
Consistent Kings Set For Playoff Push
Los Angeles sent a clear statement of intent out with their 7-1 road win at the Colorado Avalanche and bettors may be considering a Kings Stanley Cup triumph this year. The Pacific Division outfit are talented enough to compete for the title but are perhaps a little short on star quality.
They don’t have a McDavid or Auston Matthews; thought they counter that with reliability and consistency as a unit. The Kings rarely struggle and that is testament to the excellent coaching work at Staples Center. Expect this one to be a close contest, especially if McDavid struggles to get going early on.
KEY MAN: Anze Kopitar. Los Angeles have just one player with 56 points or more this year and that is Kopitar. He has been a revelation this season to be fair, notching 86 points in just 75 appearances and his form will be key to their chances of success.
The Kings will need to create chances for Kopitar; he is one of the league’s most dangerous options in front of goal. With a 17.8% shooting percentage, he is definitely the one to watch for Los Angeles this weekend.
Take your pick here. McDavid can inspire the Oilers to another victory but the Kings are the more complete side. Los Angeles will be quietly confident of a hard fought win on Canadian ice.
