After a fast start to the campaign, Edmonton have started to slide down the Pacific Division table in recent weeks.
The Oilers, now sixth in the standings after 37 league games, are still in the hunt for a playoff berth but inconsistencies have haunted them for most of the 2018/19 campaign.
Edmonton will need to put a solid run of form together in January if they are to reassert their dominance in the Pacific.
Meanwhile, the Sharks are up to second in the division and plenty of punters will fancy San Jose to record another victory here.
With just two regulation defeats in their last 10 league games, San Jose are in red hot form right now and a hard-fought win over Anaheim Ducks in their most recent clash has reignited the fire.
Write the Sharks off at your peril; they have the strength in depth to challenge for the Stanley Cup this season.
San Jose won three of the four meetings between the two sides in the 2017/18 campaign but Edmonton opened up with an impressive 4-3 win over the Sharks back in November.
It could go either way here; the Oilers have home advantage but San Jose are in better form. Take your pick, it is difficult to split these two teams in a one-off contest…
Divisional Win Could Spur Oilers On
Edmonton have lost four on the spin but a win here will give the entire organisation a huge lift ahead of a busy schedule. The Oilers are about to embark on a four-game road run and winning both home fixtures ahead of that trip could be huge for momentum.
With Connor McDavid on the roster, anything is possible. The Edmonton center is one of the leading contenders in the MVP race after notching 54 points in 36 games – an incredible feat to say the least.
888sport are pricing the Oilers at 23/20 to emerge victorious in this encounter; punters will be keen to back Edmonton on home ice. Confidence may be low right now but back-to-back wins over the Sharks and then the Winnipeg Jets should give the Oilers a lift.
At the time of writing, Edmonton are now 50/1 to go on and lift the Stanley Cup this season. The McDavid factor will keep the Oilers in the hunt but you won’t find too many punters siding with Edmonton at this moment in time.
Sharks Firing On All Cylinders
San Jose have a plethora of superstars on their roster; from goaltender Martin Jones to star center Logan Couture.
The collective is more important than individuals at the Shark Tank though and that is reflected in their points tallies – five players have recorded 30+ points but none of those have topped the 40-point mark.
Brent Burns was San Jose’s hero last time out – the defenseman scored a huge winner on his 1,000th NHL appearance. A fan favourite with the Sharks organisation, Burns could make the difference once again this weekend.
Now 20/1 with Betway to go on and win the Stanley Cup, San Jose are worth considering in the Stanley Cup battle. The Sharks will take some stopping if they hit top form at the right time.
This one has all the makings of a modern classic. The Oilers are in desperate need of a lift and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see Edmonton turn this one into an ugly contest.
On the other hand, the Sharks are looking to continue their momentum and San Jose have the class to put Edmonton to the sword. Their quality might just tell on Saturday night…
