The 2021 Queen’s Plate happens at Woodbine Racetrack on Sunday, August 22, 2021. The race is the most important in Canada, the first jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown, and the oldest continuously-running sporting event in North America. This year 13 Canadian-bred three-year-olds will take their shot at horse racing immortality.
In addition to a spot in horse racing immortality, the Queen’s Plate also offers a $1,000,000 purse. Its winner can also continue pursuing the Canadian Triple Crown, a series that continues with the Prince of Wales Stakes on the Fort Erie dirt course on September 14 and concludes with the Breeders’ Stakes over the grass at Woodbine on October 3. No horse since Wando in 2003 has swept that series.

Queen’s Plate Handicapping
#6 Munnyfor Ro will take some beating in the Queen’s Plate. She comes into the race after a good-looking victory in the Woodbine Oaks, and she keeps strong rider Justin Stein in the irons. Fillies have done well in the Queen’s Plate throughout its history, and she has both the liking for Tapeta and the improving form to be a threat in the race.
Munnyfor Ro’s late-running style should get her a good trip, as well. Though she does not need an absolute pace collapse to win a race, she should get an honest pace with so much of the field wanting to be close to the early fractions. With that kind of a setup, expect this daughter of Munnings to come running late.
#7 Riptide Rock takes a sharp step up in distance; he won going six furlongs last out and stretches out to ten here. However, that should not pose a problem. That allowance win shows an affinity for Tapeta. He has a strong two-turn form against open company (not just Canadian-breds) at Oaklawn. And, he has a stout pedigree for the mile and a quarter.
Morning line favourite #8 Keep Grinding is a stalking-to-midpack type. Though he loses his previous regular rider Justin Stein to Munnyfor Ro, he gets a top-class replacement in Rafael Hernandez. Keep Grinding comes into this race third off the lay, but he ran a good second in an open stakes race last time and has a good chance to return to his peak performance now.
Queen’s Plate Longshots
Longshots rarely get more live than #10 Dance Some Mo. The Graham Motion trainee has not tried stakes company yet. However, he has been holding his own against open company, always a positive sign when moving into a Canadian-restricted company. And, he has an excellent distance pedigree, being by Uncle Mo from the family of Queen’s Plate luminaries Dance Smartly and Dancethruthedawn.
Dance Some Mo has the tactical speed to handle this relatively outside gate. And, his jockey Patrick Husbands knows Woodbine as well as any jockey. Husbands has also won two Queen’s Plates already and can step up on a big day at his home track again.
#12 Tidal Forces can also move forward at a price in the Queen’s Plate. Though he must turn the tables on several of his foes after the Marine (G3) last out, he is lightly enough raced to improve. He has the tactical speed to work out a trip from this outside gate. He also has a win at nine furlongs already and being by Malibu Moon from the family of long-distance turf mare Irish Mission, he is intriguing going even longer.
