Professional MMA Records
Colby Covington: 16-3
Jorge Masvidal: 35-15
Saturday night’s main event features a clash of fighters in search of redemption following recent humbling losses to Kamaru Usman. Covington earned his shot at the UFC welterweight crown by kicking off his professional career with wins in 15 of his first 16 fights. The 34-year-old American established himself as somewhat of a submission specialist early in his career, forcing a tap out in four of his first victories. However, he has steadily seen more and more fights go the distance, with six of his past eight contests getting decided by the judges.

The lone exceptions during that stretch were a fifth-round TKO win over Tyron Woodley, whose night came to an end due to a rib injury, and Covington’s fifth-round TKO loss to Usman in their first championship clash at UFC 245. Some of the opponents that Covington has recently outlated include Robbie Lawler, Dong Hyun Kim. Also, Rafael dos Anjos, whom he defeated by unanimous decision at UFC 225 to claim the interim UFC welterweight title, of which he was later stripped while battling health issues.

Masvidal returns to the octagon for the first time in over 10 months and will be facing an opponent not named Usman for the first time in almost two-and-half years. After lasting a full five rounds with Usman at UFC 251, “Gamebred” did not fare so well in their rematch last April, surviving just a little over one minute into the second round in a KO loss.

The two fights with Usman capped an incredible five-fight stretch for Masvidal. The 37-year-old Miami native earned Performance of the Night and Fight of the Night bonuses for his second-round knockout win over Darren Till at UFC Fight Night 147. Masvidal then recorded the fastest knockout win in UFC history, finishing Ben Askren in just five seconds at UFC 239, and followed up with a third-round TKO win over Nate Diaz in their battle for the “BMF” belt at UFC 244.

Dos Anjos, Hardy Highlight UFC 272 Undercard
Elsewhere on the UFC 272 odds, a 160-pound catchweight clash is featured in the co-main event as Rafael dos Anjos takes on Renato Moicano as a 1.57 favourite. The Brazilian southpaw has been idle since November 2020, when he made a successful return to the UFC lightweight division with a narrow split decision win over Paul Felder at UFC Vegas 14. That marked just his second win in six outings since December 2017, with each of his recent losses coming by decision.

Conversely, Moicano will be maintain a busy schedule when he enters the octagon on Saturday listed as 2.40 underdogs. The 32-year-old is coming off a second-round submission win over Alexander Hernandez at UFC 271. Overall, Moicano has not seen a fight go beyond two rounds during his current 4-3 run, with each of those wins coming by submission.
Earlier in the evening, Bryce Mitchell faces off against Edson Barboza as a 1.59 favourite in a clash of featherweights, and Kevin Holland battles fellow welterweight Alex Oliveira as 1.30 chalk. Kevin hardy looks to get past the first two-fight losing streak of his career as he takes on fellow heavyweight Sergey Spivak as a lengthy 2.75 underdog. The former NFL star is coming off a stunning first-round knockout loss to Tai Tuivasa last summer at UFC 264 that represents the worst defeat of his career to date. Spivak looks to Saturday’s clash as a strong 1.45 favourite despite suffering a stunning opening-round loss to Tom Aspinall in his last outing at UFC Vegas 36, which also marked his second first-round defeat in seven fights.
